Silicone-filled implants were banned by the federal government in 1992 but the ban was lifted in 2006 and now are chosen in over 80 percent of surgeries, according to a report by Bloomberg.
Some of the recent lawsuits allege that a breast implant manufacturer did not properly apprise recipients about the dangers of silicone implants and failed to inform the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Specifically it is alleged that the chemicals used in the implant could bleed silicone through the liner of the device and into the body.
When a silicone gel-filled implant ruptures, one may notice hard lumps over the implant or chest area, an uneven appearance of the breasts, pain or tenderness, tingling, swelling, numbness, burning, or changes in sensation, according to the FDA. Silicone gel that leaks outside the capsule surrounding the implant may travel away from the breast. The leaked silicone gel may cause lumps to form in the breast or in other tissue, most often the chest wall, armpit or arm. It may be difficult or impossible to remove silicone gel that has traveled to other parts of the body, according to the FDA.
