Rogers, AR, March 9, 2017 (Newswire.com) - Sean T. Keith, of Northwest Arkansas law firm Keith, Miller, Butler, Schneider & Pawlik (K.M.B.S.P), with locations in Rogers and Fayetteville, was selected to be a member of the Merit Selection Committee to assist in the consideration of the reappointment of Judge Erin L. Setser to a new, eight-year term as magistrate. Keith was appointed to the panel by the United States District Court, Western District of Arkansas.
The Merit Selection Panel is assembled to determine whether the current magistrate, Setser, should be reappointed to an additional eight-year term. The committee consists of five attorneys and two non-attorneys from western Arkansas. The panel is required to submit a report as to whether it recommends Setser for an additional term of office within 90 days of appointment.
Magistrate judges serve as judicial officers of the U.S. district courts and exercise the jurisdiction delegated to them by law and assigned by the district judges, according to the Federal Judiciary Center. The position of magistrate is similar to a judge however the magistrate generally makes rulings on motions prior to trial. Magistrate judges may be authorized to preside in almost every type of federal trial proceeding except for felony cases.
