Local Research Group Encourages Skin Cancer Awareness

Highlands Oncology Group Supports National Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month

Highlands Oncology Group (Highlands), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer research group, encourages residents to use May, which is National Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, as an opportunity for education and awareness.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The two most common types of skin cancer, basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, are highly curable. However, melanoma, the third most common skin cancer, is more dangerous and can be fatal. About 65 to 90 percent of melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, according to the CDC.

Melanoma will account for about 76,380 cases of skin cancer in 2016, according to the American Cancer Society.

There are several preventive measures that people should use to protect from developing skin cancer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, which include: applying sunscreen when spending time outdoors, seeking shade, protecting skin with clothing, using extra caution around water, sand and snow, avoiding tanning beds and regularly checking skin for signs of cancer.

It is recommended  to examine skin for unusual markings, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF). While self-exams shouldn’t replace the important annual skin exam performed by a physician, they offer the best chance of detecting the early warning signs of skin cancer, according to the SCF.

As the leading cancer treatment and research facility in Northwest Arkansas, Highlands is dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment and to providing patients with the best possible care and results.
