Northwest Arkansas Oncologists and Neurosurgeons Meet to Discuss Patient Care
Fayetteville, AR, May 8, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Local physicians have strengthened an effort to increase transparency within treatment plans of patients, for the sake of improving treatment options. Physicians from Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), a Northwest Arkansas-based cancer treatment and research group, as well as neurosurgeons practicing at Washington Regional Medical Clinic meet weekly to discuss efforts regarding the treatment and care of patients in NWA.
The coterie meets on Monday mornings to discuss patient cases regarding the brain, spine and nervous system. Collaboration is key because many patients are treated by physicians at both facilities. The goal of the conferences is to improve upon treatment strategies in order to ensure patients receive effective care and outcomes.
Discussions at the conference vary from how effective communication should flow between the two parties to much more complicated collaborative efforts regarding cancer treatment and surgery. Continuous improvement in neurosurgery, and neuro oncology, is important as neurological tumors are a major health risk in the United States and worldwide.
There will be 22,850 malignant brain and spinal cord tumors diagnosed in 2015 in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society statistical estimates.
Brain, spine and central nervous system tumors are the most common cancer among children, according to the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA). Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in people under the age of 20 in the U.S., second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in males between the ages of 20 and 39 in the U.S., fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in females between the ages of 20 and 39 in the U.S. and there are nearly 70,000 people in the U.S. living with a brain tumor, according to the ABTA.
The Monday morning meeting of surgeons and physicians serves to represent an alliance dedicated to the conjoined effort of delivering more positive results for the treatment and comfort of patients in NWA.
As the leading cancer treatment and research facility in Northwest Arkansas, HOG is dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment and to providing patients with the best possible care and results.
