Rogers, AR, February 19, 2015 (Newswire.com) - February is National Cancer Prevention Month and, as such, Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer research group, supports the promotion and education of cancer awareness and prevention in Northwest Arkansas; in February and every month.
About one-third of the most common cancers in the United States could be prevented by being healthy, being active and staying lean, according to American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) estimates. One-third of the estimated cases of new cancer diagnoses in the U.S. in 2015 equals about 547,000 cases of preventable cancer occurrences.
In 2015, there will be an estimated 1,658,370 new cancer cases diagnosed and 589,430 cancer deaths in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Cancer is a leading cause of death in the United States and throughout the world and it is paramount to the prevention of cancer to promote habits that may prevent possible cases of cancer.
The AICR recommends the following habits to protect oneself from common cancers: be as lean as possible without becoming underweight, be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day (limit sedentary habits), avoid sugary drinks, eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes, limit consumption of red meats and avoid processed meats, limit the use of alcohol, limit consumption of salt and salty foods and don’t use supplements to protect oneself against cancer.
